About this race
Trail de Juliau takes place in Saint-Jean-le-Centenier, set between Mont Juliau and the Ardèche limestone slopes leading to the volcanic Coiron plateau. Participants can select the Petit Juliau, an 11 km race covering 450 m of elevation gain, the Grand Juliau, a 21 km race with 900 m of climbing, or La Basaltique, the 46 km option featuring approximately 1,900 m of ascent. The event also offers a children's race program for ages 3 to 10, ensuring participation for younger runners. A recent running saw 680 participants across the various trail, hike, and kids’ races, with the Grand Juliau course record updated to 1:33:08.
The shorter races navigate limestone hillsides, open terrain, steep woodland trails, and ascend to the Croix de Juliau. La Basaltique extends further, initially circling Mont Juliau and the lands of Aps, then crossing to the Coiron side, with black basalt rock that lends the race its name. This route includes a former basalt quarry, the Balmes de Montbrun with its 13th-century troglodyte dwellings, and the Tour de Mirabel. The name Juliau is linked to a local tale of Julius Caesar crossing the small mountain with his legions between Saint-Jean-le-Centenier and Alba-la-Romaine. The long course is classified as ITRA Mountain Level 4, provides four aid stations, and allows runners eight hours to complete.
