About this race

Trail des Calanques begins in Luminy, near Marseille, leading runners into the Calanques National Park between granite cliffs and the Mediterranean Sea. Held annually in February since 1985, this event offers a series of challenging coastal trail runs. Participants can choose from three routes: Marseilleveyre, approximately 19 km with 1000 m of elevation gain; Sugiton, around 36 km with 2000 m of gain; and En Vau, about 56 km with 3000 m of gain. The most demanding route contributes to the UTMB Index and qualifies runners for the Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc, attracting both seasoned mountain athletes and regular local trail runners. The race crosses sensitive national park trails, prompting the organizer, Club Alpin Français Marseille Provence, to limit participant numbers and enforce strict regulations. Trekking poles are prohibited to minimize trail erosion. Course markers are made from reusable fabric or recycled plastic, and aid stations prioritize bulk, organic provisions over disposable packaging. The organizing club boasts a history of nearly 150 years, with Marseille-Provence volunteers managing the event for approximately 40 years. This long-standing involvement imbues the race with a distinct Club Alpin character, emphasizing technical coastal running, steep ascents, cliffside paths, and a commitment to preserving the Calanques' condition post-event.
