About this race

The Trail des Tranchées is a March trail running event held in Verdun, France. Races begin in Douaumont and conclude at Pré l'Évêque. The Circuit Vaillant, the longest course, covers approximately 55 km with 1,200 m of elevation gain and holds UTMB Index 50K status, qualifying participants for the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc. Additional races include shorter trail runs of about 32 km, 18 km, and 14 km, a 15 km Nordic walking route, and children's races, ensuring the weekend caters to various participants. The race crosses the Verdun battlefield, starting near the Ossuary and passing historical sites such as forts, ouvrages, fortified shelters, command posts, and old batteries from World War I. The majority of the Vaillant route follows paths and woodland tracks, involving numerous ascents and descents over varied terrain including dirt, grass, undergrowth, and mud; spring rainfall can significantly affect ground conditions. This long course is designed for experienced runners capable of managing several hours in semi-autonomy. Towards the finish, runners descend toward Verdun through orchards, ascend the 73 steps of the Monument to Victory, and then proceed to the finish at Pré l'Évêque. The event was established to mark the centenary of the Great War, and its course is situated within a Natura 2000 area and a designated exceptional forest.
