The Trail du Petit Montaudin begins in the village of Montaud, located in the northern Vercors. Two distances are offered: l’Express at 12 km and Combe Noire at 23 km. A Nordic walk and a children’s race are also part of the day's events, ensuring participation beyond just long-distance mountain runners. The primary races commence together, providing both shorter and longer course participants with a shared initial surge before the paths diverge.
The most distinctive element is the timed ascent within the Combe Noire race: a 2 km section with 600 metres of elevation gain, accompanied by a 100 euro award for the fastest climber. This presents a severely steep challenge, brief enough for an aggressive pace but demanding enough to penalize any miscalculation. The inaugural event attracted close to 600 participants to Montaud on a Saturday afternoon, with Gildas Ruyant securing victory after establishing an early lead and extending it.
