The Trail Grand Velay - Polignac is a trail race held in Polignac, in France’s Grand Velay region, offering three distances: 10 km, 21 km, and 31 km. The 10 km, named La Vellave Express, features 400 m of elevation gain and is suitable for occasional trail runners, road runners aiming for a fast time, and participants aged 16 and up. The 21 km route includes 800 m of climbing, can be completed individually or in pairs, and incorporates four significant ascents. A team challenge is available for the 10 km distance, alongside children's races on Saturday, with on-site registration.
The courses navigate the region's historical sites and varied terrain, avoiding simple paths. Participants will pass the Polignac fortress, the Château de Saint-Vidal, and the Bois des Seigneurs, encountering singletrack, scree, woodland ascents, and off-trail segments. The 10 km begins with two quick kilometres, followed by a climb up the Roche de Flayac, a route through woods towards the Chemin de Sainte Anne, and a downhill finish after the last ascent in the Bois des Seigneurs. The 21 km also starts rapidly through Polignac, ascends the Roche de Flayac, proceeds through five kilometres of woods and country paths to the highest point above Saint-Vidal, then descends to an aid station at the base of the château. A customary beer awaits finishers.
