About this race
The Ultra Vilain Trail begins at the marina in La Roche-Bernard, a small town in Morbihan, Brittany, leading runners into the surrounding Vilaine river country. This autumn trail event, typically held in late September or October, offers three distances: 15 km, 35 km, and 80 km. The 80 km race is a true ultra, featuring approximately 2,000 meters of elevation gain, while the shorter distances maintain a similarly rugged, natural character without demanding a full day on the trails.
The routes traverse technical paths near La Roche-Bernard, Marzan, and Nivillac, incorporating wooded areas, rocky ascents, and crossings over the Vilaine river. This terrain is significant as Brittany is often perceived as flat; however, this race emphasizes short, steep climbs and the relief offered by the river valley. Sport Nature Roche Vilaine, the local outdoor sports association that organizes the event, was established in 1999 and subsequently developed the ultra to commemorate its 20th anniversary. The club, initially small, expanded to over 50 members after opening its membership to a broader range of runners and outdoor athletes.
