UltrAriège is a mid-July mountain trail race held in Ax-les-Thermes, Ariège, Occitanie, within the French Pyrenees. The event offers runners multiple distance options over the same terrain, ranging from 15 km and 23 km to 55 km, 100 km, and approximately 170 km. These are not easy runs; the routes traverse technical mountain trails, ascend to high passes and summits, and connect forests, lakes, and villages throughout the Ariège valleys. The longest race can also be completed as a relay, enabling teams to undertake the full Pyrenean crossing alongside solo ultra runners.
The main route begins at Guzet, near the base of the Garbet valley, and concludes in Ax-les-Thermes after roughly 165 km of point-to-point running. It involves an ascent of approximately 10,200 meters, features a 55-hour time limit, 16 aid stations, and 3 larger bases for runner regrouping. The course incorporates significant Ariège landmarks instead of just trail mileage: Port de Saleix, Mont Ceint, Port de Lers, Pic des Trois Seigneurs, Mont Fourcat, the Montségur sector, Pic du Saint Barthélemy, Rocher de Scaramus, and Col de la Chioula are all part of the long-route itinerary. Shorter formats commence from locations like Mercus and Monts d’Olmes, while the shortest circuit starts and ends in Ax-les-Thermes.
