About this race
The Urban Trail de Villeneuve les Avignon is a semi-night urban trail race held in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, within the Gard department of Occitanie. Participants start at 6 PM in late January, running as the city lights up after dark. The primary trail choices are 5 km with approximately 70 m of elevation gain and 9 km with about 180 m of climbing. Some event listings also note a 20 km option or a 9 km walk for those preferring a slower pace on the night route.
The course winds through streets, small squares, old alleys, viewpoints, and heritage sites in the town, historically a retreat for popes and cardinals situated across the Rhône from Avignon. A unique aspect of the event is the opportunity to traverse historic monuments and locations typically off-limits to the public, lending the race a dual character of athletic pursuit and guided nocturnal exploration. Local accounts mention a relaxed, festive atmosphere in the town center, and one participant highlighted the volunteers' contribution as a significant element of the event.
