The AJ Bell Great North 10k begins and ends on Great North Road in Newcastle, with waves starting from 10:00 am. This city-centre 10k is open to runners aged 15 and over. The route incorporates Newcastle landmarks rather than directing participants to quiet back roads. The Tyne Bridge is a prominent sight, and the event caters to a diverse field: individuals aiming for a personal best, charity participants, local club runners, and newer runners seeking a major 10k event without committing to a half marathon.
The course offers a gentle start, with the initial kilometres descending, followed by a 1.5km flat stretch before approximately 4.5km of winding uphill running. The final 2km are flat, allowing tired legs a clear path back to the finish. Music accompanies the event, featuring DJ sets at the Great North Road start and finish line, along with motivation stations positioned throughout the route. Post-race, runners proceed to the event village on the Town Moor, where they will receive a medal and an exclusive T-shirt.
