About this race
ATW Hatfield 5 is a five-mile road race held at The Forum on the University of Hertfordshire campus in Hatfield. This is the twelfth year for the event, which incorporates the Herts County Senior Championships. As a result, it attracts club runners aiming for county positions and recreational runners seeking a swift, accessible distance. The course is known for its speed, having yielded one of the fastest five-mile times recorded in the UK. The route features minimal elevation gain, with only three metres of climbing noted by the end of Wilkins Green Lane.
Runners start on campus, heading down College Lane before taking two wide turns onto the Alban Way, a well-used path connecting Hatfield and St Albans. The course then follows Wilkins Green Lane, crosses the Alban Way once more, and passes through Smallford Lane and Sleapcross Gardens. It proceeds onto the level, straight A414 footpath before turning onto Comet Way. The last mile follows the Alban Way back to the race headquarters. All finishers receive custom medals, complimentary event photos, and refreshments at the finish.
