About this race

The Ditchling Beacon Hill Climb is a one-mile mid-week cycling event held on Ditchling Beacon in East Sussex. Organized by Brighton Mitre CC, it serves as a fitness test and training race. The first rider departs shortly after entries close in the evening, lending the event a straightforward club-night atmosphere: arrive, ride uphill intensely, and receive a time. Brighton Mitre members participate without charge, while other riders incur a modest entry fee. Online registration is recommended to assist the organizer in seeding the field accurately. The climb follows the road from Ditchling up the steep northern aspect of Ditchling Beacon, which stands as the highest point in East Sussex at 248 metres and ranks third among the South Downs' highest points. Participants submit an estimated time to facilitate a start order from fastest to slowest, minimizing the risk of encountering vehicles on the confined ascent. While late entries are permitted, they forfeit the seeding benefit. The hill itself possesses considerable historical significance for a one-mile time trial; it was formerly an Iron Age hill fort, retaining remnants of ramparts on its northern and eastern flanks. The same road has featured in prominent London-to-Brighton routes and top-tier professional races.
