About this race
The Buttermere Trail Race is a 20 km trail run starting from Buttermere Village in Cumbria. Race headquarters are in the village, with the start and finish located in the National Trust field at the north west corner of Buttermere Lake. The event takes place in March, beginning at 10:00. The route is low-level and fully marked, suitable for both novice trail runners and experienced off-road racers. Entry is limited to 200 participants, the minimum age is 17, and the race is licensed by the Trail Running Association under UK Athletics rules.
The course consists of one circuit around the shores of Buttermere and Crummock Water. It incorporates lakeshore paths, firm rocky trails, grassy tracks, and woodland singletrack. The western shoreline of Crummock Water is encountered early and presents the more rugged, wet, and technical terrain; later parts of the course use firmer paths. There are no distance markers, requiring runners to remain attentive, though prior navigation experience is not essential. Registration occurs in the Old School Hall. Parking is restricted and available for cash payment only. All finishers will be awarded a unique medal.
