Ironman du Pays de Galles

The cliffs above the swim start are a significant feature: in race reports, they are described as "black with people," and the sunrise is simply called "breathtaking." Ironman du Pays de Galles has the character of a challenging coastal triathlon, not a refined event, with the sea, road, town, and spectators closely situated. The day includes a two-loop swim, a two-loop road bike course, and a four-loop run that returns you through town. The ascent from the water to transition is the sort of challenge one finisher noted would be remembered, and the bike course is demanding enough that the final section was termed infernal. It attracts sports enthusiasts of all abilities, but the spectators are also important: when a tired runner pauses on the road, the public encourages him, reminding him of his purpose.
