The John Muir Way Ultra Nocturnal is a six-hour night ultra held on Scotland's Golf Coast, starting at Balgone Estate in East Lothian, close to North Berwick. Participants complete as many laps as possible on a 5K off-road trail loop after sunset. Both solo runners and relay teams of up to three can enter. This event is promoted as Scotland's sole night-time ultra marathon, making a headtorch essential equipment.
The course includes varied terrain and passes through a tented base each lap, allowing runners regular access to their gear, food, and support. The atmosphere aims for a social night out rather than a typical trail race, with music, lights, food, and potentially fire. Some solo runners aim for distances of 30K, 50K, or more within the six-hour limit, while relay teams have the flexibility to divide the laps among their members as they see fit.
