About this race

The Langdale Marathon & Half Marathon is a steep road race in Great Langdale, located in the Lake District, featuring gradients up to 1:3. Held in September, it includes a one-lap half marathon and a two-lap marathon. Both races start and finish at Sticklebarn. The marathon route ascends approximately 3,400 feet overall. The event is frequently called the UK’s toughest road marathon, a description that fits: the climbs are sustained, and the second marathon lap transforms familiar roads into a mental challenge alongside the physical one. The course proceeds anti-clockwise from Great Langdale towards Little Langdale, then passes Skelwith Bridge, Chapel Stile, and returns to Great Langdale. Following a flat opening mile, runners encounter the steep ascent to Blea Tarn, followed by a descent to Skelwith Bridge. A demanding climb up Foulstep is next, then a section alongside Loughrigg Tarn, and another descent towards The Langdale Hotel. Participant numbers are modest, with significantly more half marathoners than marathoners. Marathon runners may experience extended periods alone during the second lap. Course support is limited, but marshals and signage provide necessary guidance. Finishers are awarded medals featuring a metal carving of Harrison Stickle; prizes are substantial, including large trophies for overall winners and age-category recipients.
