About this race

Marathon Eryri is a full marathon held in Eryri National Park, North Wales. It begins near Llanberis at 10:30am and circumnavigates Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Wales' highest peak. This event is a mountain-road marathon, distinct from urban races. It originated as the Snowdonia Marathon in 1982, established by the National Trust to raise funds for the Snowdonia Appeal and offer a more challenging option compared to the burgeoning popularity of town and city races. The route departs Llanberis via the A4086, ascending to Pen y Pass at the summit of the Llanberis Pass, reaching approximately 1,100 feet. It then descends towards the Pen Y Cwyryd junction. Participants navigate an old road and a 2km farm track descent before rejoining asphalt, followed by a brief, steep ascent back to the main road near the campsite. The course proceeds towards Beddgelert, maintaining a close connection to the roads and villages surrounding Yr Wyddfa. When the National Trust could no longer sustain the event, local residents formed Snowdonia Marathon Cyf to ensure its continuation, underscoring the race's deep local significance.
