Race to the Stones is a 50km and 100km ultra on the Ridgeway, Britain’s oldest road, typically run over a July weekend from Lewknor toward Avebury. The full 100km route finishes at the Avebury Standing Stones, a roughly 5,000-year-old UNESCO World Heritage Site. Runners can complete the 100km non-stop, divide it over two days with basecamp camping, or select a single-day 50km option. The event provides support for long-distance racing: trails are marked, pit stops are stocked, hot food is served, bags are transported, and showers, medical support, chip timing, and finisher medals are provided.
The course follows runnable Ridgeway terrain with steady, sweeping climbs and a long list of old landmarks along the way, including Grim’s Ditch, Goring on the Thames, Liddington Hill Fort, the Uffington White Horse, Barbury Castle, and the Hackpen White Horse. Threshold Sports organizes it under an “Ultras For All” philosophy, so the field includes first-time walkers, charity runners, club runners, and fast ultra racers competing for prize money. The 100km non-stop race began in 2013 and is noted as the UK’s largest ultramarathon by single-distance entries, with over 2,000 starters in recent editions.
