Margit-sziget keeps this one simple: one lap from the Sirály boathouse, run as a monthly handicap rather than a competitive race. It has been going since 1989, originally named the Szigeti Hendikep, and the spirit remains: “runners organize it for runners.” Beginners, returners, joggers, and regular runners all fit here because you are only racing your own result.
The quirk is the start list. Your individual start time is based on your previous best, so slower runners go first and faster runners chase later; as they put it, “whoever improves more finishes earlier.” They time you every month, post the start order, and expect your bib visible at the finish so the result gets recorded. There is even a semi-serious points contest: finish a lap for one point, improve your best for three.
