About this race
Gran Fondo Città dell’Aquila is a September road-bike gran fondo held in L’Aquila, Italy. It offers three route options: 125 km with 1,600 m of elevation gain, 80 km with 1,200 m, and 50 km with 850 m. The event is part of the Volchem Circuit, utilizes MySDAM timing, and focuses on amateur endurance cycling, distinct from a flat, fast sportive.
The course begins at the city walls and proceeds towards the Gran Sasso massif. Riders will traverse high plateaus, mountain roads, and hilltop villages within the Aquilan territory. The emphasis is on climbing, with each distance requiring consistent effort and thorough preparation. This race honors Mauro Mannucci, an Alpini Corporal Major who passed away in a cycling accident, and the organizers use the event to promote cyclist safety awareness.
