About this race
La Francigena e le Vie Etrusche della Maremma is a bicycles-only bikepacking adventure on the Via Francigena, with the Maremma edition based in the province of Grosseto. Riders start from Castiglione della Pescaia at Casa Rossa Ximenes in the Diaccia Botrona wetland area, then choose either a road track or a gravel track. The event is built for self-supported distance riding rather than a closed-road race, with a long route of more than 450 km and a shorter 200 km option for riders with only a weekend or the legs to ride it in one Saturday.
The routes head through some of southern Tuscany’s strongest riding country: the woods of Tirli, Cala Violina, Punta Ala, Maremma Park, Argentario, Capalbio, Manciano, Scansano, Saturnia, Sovana, Pitigliano, and Sorano. The series began with a first edition at San Rossore Park, then crossed the provinces of Pisa, Lucca, Florence, and Siena before moving to Maremma. Bikerando asd, Pro sasso ets, the Municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia, and the Maremma Experience tourism consortium organize it, with technical support from Bagnoli Bike, Maremma in gravel, and Gravel Bike Siena.
