About this race
Stramassafra is an 11 km road race in Massafra, a town in Puglia in southern Italy, with the start and finish on Corso Italia. It is an international race for men and women, and it also stays open to amateur runners of any age. The event runs annually and dates back to 1988, when the local Podistica Massafra club organized the first edition. By its tenth edition it was added to Italy’s national road-race calendar, which opened it to Italian and foreign athletes in the Junior, Promising, and Senior categories.
The route gives runners a compact tour of Massafra: it leaves Corso Italia, passes Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, drops down Viale Regina Margherita and Via La Rotonda, then enters the Old City by Via La Liscia and the climb of Via La Terra. It goes through the Castle, comes out at Piazza Garibaldi, crosses Garibaldi bridge, climbs Via Colonnello Scarano, and then pushes into rural roads as far as Contrada Parco di Guerra before returning through Via Santa Caterina. Stramassafra also has a cultural side, with school drawing contests, an annual lithograph of a Massafra monument, and matching commemorative postcards distributed alongside the race.
