About this race
The PSS Imperial Palace Health Running event starts and finishes by the clock tower inside Sakuradamon Gate, following the established running loop around Tokyo’s Imperial Palace. It is a small, low-cost summer race and practice session offering 5 km, 10 km, 20 km, and 20 km relay options. Individual entries cost 1,000 yen, while the relay is 4,000 yen. The longer events begin earlier in the morning, with the 5 km and 10 km races commencing shortly thereafter. Beginners are welcome, but lap cutoffs remain relevant: 20 km runners must be on their fourth lap by the specified checkpoint time, and 10 km runners need to pass the 5 km mark before their cutoff.
The atmosphere is notably flexible for a timed race. The organizer, PSS Inc., refers to it as “Japan’s most relaxed race,” and the regulations reflect this: late arrivals are permitted, same-day entry is available, runners may switch events on race day, and participants who stop early will still be recorded for the distance they completed. An improvised distance, such as 15 km, can even be established on the spot. Timing is manual, using a stopwatch with a printer, and all participants receive an award. Feedback characterizes it less as a major event and more as a practical Imperial Palace training day, beneficial for assessing current fitness, practicing lap pacing, or completing a long run before a marathon.
