Clyde Classic Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
SAT OCT 31
The Clyde Classic is a running and walking event in Clyde, a former gold-mining town in Central Otago, New Zealand. It offers a half marathon, 10K, 5K, and a kids race, with every distance starting and finishing at Clyde Primary School. The half marathon is a 21.1 km run-only race, while the 10K and 5K are open to both runners and walkers. The shorter options make the event suitable for families, first-timers, and people who want a community event rather than a competitive race day. The course uses Clyde’s old town streets, crosses the Contact Energy Clyde Dam, and follows tracks beside the Clutha River. The half marathon includes vineyard views and rural-trail loops, while the 10K and 5K follow shorter routes through town, over the dam, and along the river paths. Aid stations are provided on the longer distances, but the event is cup-free, so participants bring their own cup or bottle for refills. The race also has a community-giving focus, with local involvement built into the day.
Mt Isthmus Traverse
SAT NOV 7
Mt Isthmus Traverse is an off-road running event on Glen Dene Station near Lake Hawea, New Zealand. Active QT organizes it, with four race options: a 42.2km Mountain Marathon, a 27km Hill Run, a 10km Trail-Hill Run, and a 5km Trail-Hill Run. The longer races start in the morning from Dinner Flat, while the shorter trail-hill races start later from the same start and finish area. The course uses mountain trails, single track, ridgelines, and 4WD farm tracks, with open views over Lake Hawea and the Southern Alps. The marathon is the hardest option, with 2,175m of climbing and big alpine climbs and descents; the 27km race still packs in 1,529m of gain on rugged hill terrain. Even the shorter races are not flat: the 10km has 652m of climbing, and the 5km loop still climbs 310m, so this series suits runners who want hills rather than a fast road-style effort.

About 5K races in Queenstown

Queenstown Training Notes

Queenstown hosts 2 5K races in 2026 within 80 km of the city centre — upcoming dates, recurring series, and other races nearby, all in one place.

Locals run Queenstown Gardens and the Lake Wakatipu edge when they want flat rhythm and quick Z2. Queenstown parkrun gives runners a flat, fast 5km course through Queenstown Gardens and along the lakefront. The Ben Lomond Track gives runners a proper mountain hit, with 15km and 1500m of elevation gain from the Tiki Trail side. Lake Hayes loop, Arrow River Trail, Sunshine Bay Track, and Moonlight Track keep base miles fresh. Run ZQN runs Tuesday 6pm intervals from The Mill, Thursday Trails on the Arrowtown tracks, and Sunday Long Run. New Zealand Sotheby’s International Queenstown Marathon is the anchor event.

Locals ride the Queenstown Trail for steady mileage, gravel days, and links to Arrowtown and Gibbston Valley. The Queenstown Trail gives riders 130km of off-road paths, from easy Grade 1 to tougher Grade 4 tracks. Arrow River Bridges Trail, Gibbston River Trail, Twin Rivers Trail, and Shotover Gorge Trail all get used when riders want flow without leaving town too far. Coronet Peak, Bob’s Peak, Skyline, Fernhill, and Jacks Point hold the climbs and the rowdier singletrack. Central Otago Wakatipu Cycle Club races through summer. Peak to Peak Race is the anchor event.

September to May is the best training block, especially for bikes. Queenstown Bikepark usually opens from September to May, and the main Queenstown summer biking season runs from the end of September through May. Arrow River Bridges Trail rides well in the height of summer under the willow trees. Run ZQN Thursday Trails starts at 6pm in Summer, so locals can stretch the evening on the Arrowtown tracks. Winter shifts the rhythm, with Thursday Trails starting at 5:30pm in Winter. Peak to Peak Race and Rustic Run and Walk keep the cold months honest.
