Recurring Half Marathon races near Tauranga

Races that repeat — weekly, monthly or yearly

Trail Trilogy
SUN OCT 11
The Hauraki Rail Trail defines the Trail Trilogy: a largely flat route on well-maintained paths, gravel, and compacted trail, all connected to the region’s historic railway line. It is a multi-distance off-road running and walking event, with participants moving through farmland, native bush, and small-town charm before converging at the historic Waihi Train Station. Expect straightforward rail-trail running, not technical mountain terrain: consistent surfaces, open sections, and the steady pace characteristic of following an old railway corridor. Some participants aim to run fast, others walk or join with family and friends. A notable feature is the opportunity to “race the train” on a segment of the trail before the shared finish festival at the station.
Legend of the Peaks Running & Walking Festival
SAT NOV 7
Legend of the Peaks takes participants into Whakarewarewa Forest in Rotorua, Aotearoa New Zealand. The terrain features volcanic ground, forest ascents, and technical paths. The main event is the New Zealand Forest Marathon, a 42km off-road marathon covering approximately 1,750m of elevation gain. The event also includes the 50.2km Whaka Ultra, the 21km Moerangi Half Marathon, the 10km Titokorangi 10K, the 5km Trig Loop, and shorter events for children and elders. The longer races are demanding trail runs. The Whaka Ultra crosses remote singletrack, ascends about 2,240m, and summits several peaks. The forest marathon crosses four peak summits. The half marathon features two significant climbs, and the 10K includes around 430m of elevation over two smaller peaks. The 5K offers well-maintained forest trails with 145m of climbing for less experienced trail users. The weekend accommodates first-time participants, walkers, seasoned trail runners, children, and elders, complemented by an expo, music, and food.
Tauranga City to Surf
SUN NOV 8
City to Surf Tauranga
SUN NOV 8
City to Surf Tauranga takes runners from the city side of the harbour to Mount Maunganui beach, offering 21.1km, 11km, and 5km courses. The half marathon and 11km begin near the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club at Sulphur Point. The 5km starts on Mount Main Beach by the Mount Surf Club. All three distances conclude on the sand at Mount Main Beach, adjacent to the Surf Club. The half marathon route encircles the Waikareao Estuary track, crosses the Harbour Bridge towards Mount Maunganui, and then loops the Mount Maunganui base track before the beach finish. The 11km also crosses the Harbour Bridge and incorporates the Astrolabe Corporate and Gym/Clubs teams race. The 5km utilizes the boardwalk and beach access paths, turning just past Leisure Island, and includes a lap of the Mauao base-track, ensuring the shortest race shares the same Mount-and-sand finish.
Trail Challenge Waihi
SAT NOV 14
Trail Challenge Waihi guides runners and walkers through Karangahake Gorge, a historic river gorge near Waihi featuring old railway tunnels, gold-mining remnants, swing bridges, waterfalls, and native bush along the course. This off-road running and walking event accommodates all ages and abilities, offering flat riverside trails for those seeking flow and speed, alongside climbs up Mt Karangahake for participants desiring more challenging trail work. The route incorporates the gorge’s blend of railway history and rugged natural terrain: participants will run through tunnels, pass gold mining era relics, cross bridges, follow the river, and enter bush-covered sections. The event is designed for friends, families, regular trail runners, walkers, and first-timers looking for a course with more character than a typical road race.

About Half Marathon races in Tauranga

Tauranga Training Notes

Tauranga hosts 11 Half Marathon races in 2026 within 80 km of the city centre — upcoming dates, recurring series, and other races nearby, all in one place.

Locals run the Matua waterfront from Maxwell Road and go out and back as far as the legs want. Tauranga parkrun uses Kopurererua Valley Reserve on Saturdays at 8am, and Gordon Carmichael Reserve parkrun starts in Bethlehem at 8am too. Runpub meets Thursdays at 6:30pm, The HARDWICK HUSTLE meets Saturdays, and Wild Things Trail Running Club gives trail runners company on multiple days. City to Surf Tauranga, Mount Maunganui Half Marathon, Rockys Backyard Ultra, and McLaren Falls Trail Tauranga sit as the anchor events.

Riders use the Wairoa River cycle way toward Omokoroa, especially at golden hour. Tauranga Road Cycling Club Inc. keeps the race edge sharp with Zeal Renovations Thursday Night Racing at Kelly Road, Maketu, where registration starts at 6.00pm and racing starts at 6.15pm. TECT Park gives mountain bikers the Buffalo Girl Track, Kereru Track, and Uno Track for proper singletrack and cyclocross legs. The climbs sit around Maxwell's Road and Chapel St to Vale St and Grange Rd, while the Five Angels Hilly Time Trial starts from the Papamoa end of Welcome Bay Road.

Summer gives Tauranga its best coastal months, with holidaymakers filling the white surf beaches from Mount Maunganui to Papamoa. Locals still get base miles done early, then keep the beach and cafe stops for later. Baypark Stadium hosts speedway events in summer, so the city feels busy without losing the training rhythm. Winter shifts the mood toward steadier Z2, wetter trails, and cleaner post-ride kit. Smiths Sport Shoes Winter Duathlon gives runners and riders a simple run-bike-run anchor, and Baypark Stadium hosts rugby matches when the evenings close in.
