Fish Potato Run

The Fish Potato Run sends runners from Urk, a historic fishing port, to Emmeloord, the Dutch “potato capital,” on the second Saturday of September. The main races are 4 English miles and 8 English miles, roughly 6.4 km and 12.8 km, with kidsruns also on the programme. It is a village-to-town road race through Flevoland’s Noordoostpolder, organized by Stichting Activiteiten Atletiekvereniging Noordoostpolder. Entries are capped at 3,500, and earlier editions drew about 2,500 runners. The route leaves Urk, crosses the open polder landscape, passes the green village of Tollebeek around halfway, and finishes in Emmeloord. Results use chip timing in the race number and rankings are based on net time, which suits a field that includes club runners, business teams, and regular recreational runners. The event is old enough to be on its 35th edition, but it keeps a local touch: finishers get both a medal and a bag of Poldergoud potatoes. The top three men and women in both the 4 English mile and 8 English mile races receive prizes, and the finish area has practical runner basics such as showers, changing space, first aid, parking, and a supervised cloakroom.
