About this race
The Strontraceloop begins and ends at beach pavilion ’t Oude Strandhuys in Workum, located on the Frisian coast. It takes place on a Saturday around the autumn school holiday. This is a modest road-and-trail running event featuring a 15.2 km race, a 7.2 km race, and a youth run of approximately 1.5 km. The adult races typically commence in the afternoon, while the youth race starts earlier. The entry fee remains low.
The longer course guides runners from the beach onto the summer dike, crossing the De Workumerwaard and Warkumerbûtenwaard nature reserves, proceeding towards Gaast, and then returning to Workum along the sea dike. The 7.2 km route shares the initial section before diverging back sooner. The event's name originates from the autumn "strontrace," a sailing competition where vessels race from Workum to Warmond and back. Following the runners' completion, an awards ceremony and raffle are held. Prizes are awarded to the top male and female finishers in the main distances, along with a challenge cup for the first local runner from Workum.
