About this race
The Zeemijlenloop Delfzijl is a running event in the Dutch port town of Delfzijl, held annually in October and organized by Atletiekvereniging Fivelstreek. Its hook is simple and unusual: the distances are measured in nautical miles instead of standard kilometers, making it the first running event built around that measure. One nautical mile is about 1,852 meters, so the main 4-nautical-mile race comes out to 7.408 km. Depending on the program, runners may also find options such as 3 nautical miles, 6 nautical miles, a corporate run, and a Kidsrun.
The route starts at the athletics track and finishes at Molen Adam in the center of Delfzijl. Runners go through green areas and then along the sea, the harbor, and the beach, with a newer bridge included on the course. The field is not just club runners chasing times; companies, children, beginners, and regular local runners all have a place in the event. The nautical-mile setup fits Delfzijl especially well because the town’s identity is tied to the coast and harbor.
