About this race
Owhiro Bay serves as the starting point for a trail running event on the southern coast, where the Barefoot XTRAIL Series: Red Rocks directs runners onto coastal ridgelines and open terrain. It offers genuine off-road running, distinct from a manicured park path, with Wellington Harbour visible on one side, Cook Strait on the other, and the Red Rocks Coastal Track encountered later.
The initial section features a demanding climb, leading to more relaxed running across the higher ground, with expansive views available. Following the ridge traverse, the course descends into rougher sections and coastal paths, with sea air and the track winding back towards the finish near Bata Place. This event attracts runners who appreciate effort alongside scenic vistas, and the annual Barefoot XTRAIL format provides a consistent series experience while retaining its rugged character.
