Mount Torlesse Station, situated beneath the Mount Torlesse Range, hosts the third event in the Canterbury Winter Trail Run Series. This run offers a genuine winter trail experience, distinct from a manicured park event. It presents a quintessential Canterbury high-country trail: rough, rocky paths, open tussock hillsides, stream crossings, and sheltered areas of mānuka and beech woodland. The location feels wild, isolated, and characteristic of the high country, with private land accessible only for the race. Underfoot conditions include hills, mud, rocks, and uneven ground. The longer routes feature consistent ascents and exposed ridgelines. These ridges provide the reward, offering expansive vistas of the Mount Torlesse Range, the Canterbury Plains, and broad alpine scenery. Participants are focused on the run itself, not on show. Mandatory winter equipment, potential for cold rain or snow, unscheduled gear inspections, aid stations without cups, and spot prizes contribute to a practical and understated atmosphere.
