At a secret location in the Wellington region, Dirt Duathlon - Wairarapa has the feel of an "entry-level adventure race" rather than a straight-up run-bike-run. You are out on bush trails and rural tracks, mixing trail running, mountain biking, navigation, and enough problem-solving to keep the legs from being the only thing working. It is set up for teams, so the rhythm is more about moving well together than hammering alone.
The course uses a cloverleaf design, bringing teams back to a central hub between stages before sending them out again. Riding is non-technical, navigation is "beginner-friendly," and the "surprise challenges" and "unexpected tasks along the way" give it that proper adventure-race flavour without making it intimidating. New racers can treat it as a "great winter adventure," while experienced racers still get some strategy and teamwork to chew on.
