About this race
The Marokopa Munter is a team adventure race held in the Marokopa and Waitomo area of New Zealand’s North Island. It includes paddling, trekking, and mountain biking, offered in either a 12-hour or 24-hour format. Marokopa is located approximately two hours from New Plymouth and 90 minutes from Hamilton. Race registration and briefing take place in the village prior to teams starting. The 12-hour race is designed for teams of 2-3 people, while the 24-hour race is for teams of 4.
The course incorporates the local terrain, featuring hills, rivers, lakes, farms, and bush. Certain sections operate similarly to a rogaine, where checkpoints are optional and can be collected in any sequence. The objective is to accumulate as many checkpoints as possible before the time limit expires, emphasizing route selection and team capabilities alongside speed. Teams lacking kayaks or packrafts can participate in a Non-Paddling division, substituting the water leg with an additional mountain bike or trek stage. Adventure Events is the organiser, and the race is part of the Adventure1 NZ Series.
