About this race
From the Orongorongo River mouth, this point-to-point route follows the Wild Coast Trail around Turakirae Head, then heads inland through the Mukamuka River valley and Remutaka Forest Park. Mukamuka Munter, established in 2007, is a long-standing Wellington wilderness trail run with a grassroots "micro adventure" character: exposed south coast, remote interior, and a course that lives up to its reputation as a demanding, technical adventure.
Expect early sections of fast, hard-packed and sandy trail, followed by rocky river running, navigation tests, climbs through native forest to South Saddle, steep descents with roots, a significant river crossing, and runnable sections toward Catchpool. Participants are the rugged trail runner type, as this is a genuine backcountry running event requiring self-sufficiency and awareness of changing conditions. The rewards include wild coastlines, a relaxed, understated atmosphere, and an event that aids local conservation initiatives.
