Orienteering Challenge 1 – Killarney Lakes Forest
Sunday, August 9, 2026 · Manawaru, New Zealand
About this race
Killarney Lakes Forest is the focus: a local foot orienteering event where the race is as much in your head as in your legs. Orienteering Challenge 1 puts you into the trees with a detailed map and electronic timing, then asks you to “navigate through a series of checkpoints” by “choosing their own route” rather than just following tape or arrows.
The courses progress from White for first-timers and families, through Yellow and Orange, to Red for experienced orienteers who want route planning and navigation challenges. You can run it hard, jog the runnable sections, or walk and think, making it suitable for individuals, teams, families, and groups seeking an “active outdoor experience with flexible pacing.” The clock is still a factor: the aim is to complete the course in the shortest time, and the forest will reward calm decisions as much as speed.
