Taupō Marathon

Tongariro Street provides a significant race atmosphere, as the Taupō Marathon heads toward Tongariro Domain and the Great Lake Centre after completing two laps of the half marathon course. It ranks among New Zealand's "longest-standing running events," yet the atmosphere welcomes more than just determined marathoners; runners, walkers, families, beginners, children, and youth are all included in the day's activities. Underfoot conditions include road, path, and park surfaces, with the Great Lake Pathway featuring prominently. It offers "stunning views of Lake Taupō," "surrounding snow-covered mountains," and ample lakefront running when a distraction from pace is desired. The children participate in the Trail Tigers dash, a loop through Riverside Park returning to the finish on Tongariro Domain, contributing to the finish area's feel of a family race morning rather than an exclusive endurance event.
