About this race
Twizel Hard Labour Weekend is a two-day multisport event in Twizel. Saturday features kayaking in the morning and mountain biking in the afternoon, followed by off-road running or walking on Sunday morning. Participants can select a single event, a shorter alternative, or tackle all three disciplines to achieve the Hard Labourer title. The primary options include a 20 km Canal Kayak through hydro-canals and lakes, a 40 km Dusky mountain bike ride, a 16 km intermediate ride, and the Pyramid Run half marathon off road.
The weekend accommodates families and younger athletes with a 10 km Mini Dusky bike ride and a 5 km Mini Pyramid run or walk for children aged approximately 5 to 13. The 10 km run/walk crosses plantation-forest and farm-track terrain, while the half marathon extends onto high-country farmland and conservation-area tracks. The event originated in 1985 as a half marathon fundraiser for children's sports and retains a community atmosphere, with children receiving prizes and prizegiving taking place at the Ministry of Works in Twizel. A Youth Hard Labourer option offers participants aged 12 to 17 a condensed version of the main challenge, including a 4 to 5 km kayak on Lake Ruataniwha.
