Race To The Castle is a 40 km stand-up paddleboard race on the River Trent, starting under the Suspension Bridge and finishing at Newark Castle. It is a one-way downriver event on navigable water, with only inflatable SUP boards permitted. The race occurs on the same weekend annually, though wind, river flow, and weather can alter the challenge's character. Paddlers may enter solo, with family or friends, with a SUP club, or as part of the Race, Adventure, or Team fleets.
The route features five portages and a required break and catch-up point at Gunthorpe. The Race category is for paddlers aiming to test their skills, stamina, and tactics, while the Adventure category allows more time to complete the distance. Participants include endurance paddlers from around the world, ranging from competitive racers to those seeking a long day on the river. Every finisher receives an R2TC medal, the fastest men and women in each category are crowned Kings and Queens of the river, and the finish at Newark Castle includes an event village, after-party, and a following-day Hangover Day with demonstrations and yoga.
