About this race
Vertical Elevador de Sta Luzia is a short uphill race in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, held in June on the Santa Luzia elevator's rails. It is a national and regional vertical race covering about 650 meters from bottom to top, with 160 meters of elevation gain and a 15-minute time limit. The field is limited to 100 participants, who start individually, one minute apart, with FCMP federated runners beginning first.
The course begins at the elevator station on Av. 25 Abril and ascends directly toward the Santa Luzia temple, utilizing a combination of urban and natural terrain alongside the rail line. It is included in the National Sky Sprint Trophy and the FCMP National Youth Championship, attracting competitive mountain-running specialists alongside club and individual entrants. Participants must typically be at least 15 years old, although younger FCMP athletes are permitted, and awards are given to overall winners, age groups, and all finishers.
