Aquae Brunheiro Trail Running takes place in mid-September in Chaves, within Portugal’s Vila Real District, utilizing the Serra do Brunheiro as its primary area. The event begins in Vilar de Nantes village and provides multiple participation options: extended trail races, shorter trail races, a 12 km walk, and routes for children and juniors. The stated distances are 48 km, 30 km, 21 km, and 12 km. Previous editions featured a 12 km Mini Trail with 454 m elevation gain, a 20 km Short Trail with 1,056 m, and a 30 km Long Trail with 1,681 m.
The routes traverse mountain and forest terrain above Chaves, concluding within the city. Lobos do Brunheiro de Chaves organizes the race, with assistance from the Municipality of Chaves. It attracts both serious trail runners and individuals seeking a shorter run or walk. The event is certified by prominent trail running organizations, is eligible for UTMB Index races, and is part of national and regional trail circuits, including Vila Real’s Short and Long Trail categories. A local tradition is the post-race lunch held in the Public Garden, transforming the finish into a community gathering.
