Aquae Flaviae Night Running

Aquae Flaviae Night Running is a July road race held at night in Chaves, located in Portugal's Vila Real district. The primary event is a 13 km run through the city after dark. The schedule also features an 8 km walk and children's races, typically 300 m and 500 m. This setup caters to runners, walkers, families, and children, not exclusively competitive athletes. ADAF, the Associação Desporto Aquae Flaviae, organizes the event with backing from the Municipality of Chaves. The 13 km course is a largely flat, urban asphalt loop that goes by Chaves landmarks including the Roman Bridge, Chaves Castle, and the forts. The city was known as the Roman Aquae Flaviae, a name connected to its thermal waters, thus the race connects contemporary streets with older Flaviense heritage. A practical tradition enhances the night atmosphere: entry kits provide a shirt, a transport bag, and a front light or lantern. The finish line utilizes these lights and reflective shirts to produce a luminous collective display. Following the race, many attendees remain in the city, enjoying the local culinary offerings.
