About this race
Desafio Cumes do Marão begins and ends in Ansiães, leading participants into the Serra do Marão mountain range in northern Portugal. This trail-running event, held in September, offers three distances: 50K, 30K, and 20K. The 50K is designed as a demanding mountain challenge, while the shorter distances accommodate runners of varying training levels. All competitive distances are eligible for ITRA, UTMB Index, and ATRP points.
The routes traverse the Heart of Marão, connecting locations such as Teixeira/Mafómedes, Campeã, Montes, Cotorinho, Fontes, Soutelo, and Candemil before looping back to Ansiães. The race highlights the mountain environment and the surrounding villages. The course passes through areas recognized for their natural, cultural, and historical significance, with local hospitality forming a key aspect of the event's character. It attracts dedicated trail runners, not primarily road racers seeking a quick, level course.
