About this race
IRONMAN Portugal-Cascais begins and ends at Cascais Bay. Athletes will race from the Atlantic coast into the hills and back toward Lisbon. This October triathlon series in Cascais, Portugal, part of the Lisbon District, offers both the full IRONMAN distance and the IRONMAN 70.3. The full race covers 3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling, and 42.2 km running. The 70.3 version reduces these distances to 1.9 km, 90 km, and 21.1 km, respectively.
The cycling course is central to the race narrative. It crosses Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, ascends through Malveira, Serra de Sintra, and Lagoa Azul, and passes the historic Estoril Formula 1 Circuit. The route also extends towards Lisbon, featuring sights such as the Belém Tower, the Discoveries Monument, and the 25th of April Bridge. The full IRONMAN course is not flat, featuring 1725 m of total elevation gain, with 1400 m occurring during the cycling segment. The run is divided into three loops, each slightly over 14 km. This combination of sea, mountains, historical sites, motorsport heritage, and Lisbon landmarks provides this race with more diversity than a typical out-and-back coastal triathlon.
