40th Xistarca Run

The 40th Xistarca Run is a free morning sports event at Parque Verde in Carnide, marking Xistarca's 40th anniversary. It features short, accessible formats: a Kids Race for children up to 12, a 5 km cycling ride, a 5 km run, a 5 km walk, and a 5 km + 5 km relay. The 5 km run and relay are for adults, while the walk is open to all ages, making the day a community sports gathering rather than a single-distance road race. Everything starts and finishes in Parque Verde, with the kids going first, followed by cyclists, then the run and walk, and the relay later in the morning. The 5 km run uses age groups from Juniors and Seniors through veteran categories up to 70+, and the timed events use a chip built into the bib. Entry is free but capped at 1,500 participants. Awards are presented to the top five men and women in the 5 km run and to the top five men's and women's relay teams, with water provided at the finish line for the 5 km and Kids Race.

Iron Trail

Iron Trail is a Portuguese trail-running event offering short, long, and walking options instead of a single fixed race distance. Listings place it in the Sintra area, starting and finishing at Pavilhão Desportivo de Albogas, or tie the route to Zibreira in Torres Novas. In either version, it is a hilly off-road race utilizing local paths, forest tracks, and technical trail sections. The main race is typically 28 to 30 km, with shorter trail options around 15 to 17 km and an 11 km mini trail or walk. Route information indicates the Serra de Monfirre area, the Estremenho Massif, the Almonda Spring, and the Zibreira Caves. This suggests the race focuses on rough limestone-country running rather than smooth park trails. Associação Desportiva Trilhos do Costume organizes the event, attracting both competitive runners and participants opting for the walking distance.

About cycling & running in Loures

Loures Training Notes

Running: Locals run Loures from the river first. Passeio Ribeirinho de Loures gives runners an eight-kilometer line from the Knowledge Pavilion in Parque das Nações to the Póvoa de Santa Iria dock. The route keeps six kilometers on a modern wooden passageway, with bridges and tunnels along the Tagus River. Rota do Panorâmico gives a 10-kilometer option when legs want more work. Parque Verde hosts the 40th Xistarca Run. Meia Maratona Loures-Odivelas-Loures works as the anchor road race. Challenge Estafetas CPCD brings the team-race feel. Iron Trail takes tougher legs into Sierra de Monfirre.

Cycling: Loures riders get plenty of choice, with 157 cycle routes and 6,322 km of tracked riding. One route covers 5 km with 49 m of ascent. Another route covers 6 km and 364 m of ascent. One more route covers 8 km and 549 m of ascent. Loures/Cabeço de Montachique 40Km puts the hills near Cabeço de Montachique on the menu. Loures-Malveira-Torres Vedras-Alenquer-Alhandra-Arruda-Póvoa da Galega-Loures feels like gran fondo prep. The 12º Passeio BTT por Trilhos Saloios keeps the trail crowd honest.

Season: May and June are the clean pick for riding in Loures. Locals stack Z2, intervals, and longer loops before the heat settles in. Summer suits early starts on Passeio Ribeirinho de Loures, then a move north when base miles need rustic roads. Runners keep the riverfront honest, while cyclists point toward Bucelas, Lousa, and Cabeço de Montachique for climbing. Winter changes the city rhythm with Carnaval de Loures. Locals still train, but road runners lean on Parque Verde and the Tagus line, while riders pick steadier loops and save bigger days for clear windows.
