About this race

Marathon de Funchal is a January road race in Funchal, Madeira's capital, with the Atlantic Ocean beside the city and hills rising behind it. Also known as the Madeira Marathon, it offers a full marathon, half marathon, or 8km option, catering to competitive runners seeking a time and amateurs preferring a shorter distance. The full marathon serves as a World Marathon Majors Qualifier and a Boston Marathon qualifying race, adding a competitive element. January's appeal lies in Madeira's average temperature of around 19°C, contrasting with winter conditions elsewhere in Europe. The course winds through Funchal’s city streets, paved areas, parks, and seafront roads, connecting towns with ocean views on one side and green slopes on the other. It crosses parts of the historic center and city landmarks like Santiago Fortress. Funchal’s gardens and green spaces add visual interest compared to typical urban marathons. Spectators line the course to cheer participants, and a unique Madeira tradition marks the finish: runners can cool off in the ocean after crossing the line. Local cuisine, such as swordfish fillet with banana and tomato and onion soup, contributes to the race weekend's distinct island character.
