About this race
The Maratona do Funchal is a road race held in mid-January in Funchal, Madeira's capital city. The event includes a full marathon of 42.195 km, a 21.0975 km half marathon, and an 8 km mini marathon. Organized by the Associação de Atletismo da Madeira, it uses electronic timing and provides official overall and age-group classifications. The marathon is a Boston Qualifying Race and a World Marathon Majors qualification event, attracting runners aiming for standards and those seeking a winter race on the island.
The marathon and half marathon follow a single-loop course through Funchal, combining coastal stretches with urban streets, passing monuments and sites significant to local culture and history. Aid stations are positioned along the route, and marathon pacers are available. The half marathon attracts more participants than the marathon, with over 300 finishers in the last edition compared to more than 100 for the marathon. This creates a more intimate atmosphere than large city marathons, uniting performance athletes and recreational runners during the Madeira race weekend.
