MIUT is a late-April trail running series on Madeira, the Portuguese island in the Atlantic. It features a headline ultra of roughly 110 to 118 km and several shorter races down to 17 km. The long race is a serious mountain crossing, with about 6000 to 7200 meters of climbing depending on the edition, making it much more than a coastal run with views.
The route crosses the island through steep climbs, high ridges, forests, and coastal trails. It passes Madeira’s UNESCO-listed laurel forests, the mountain village of Curral das Freiras, and Pico Ruivo, the island’s highest point at 1861 meters. Two to three thousand runners participate, many from outside Portugal. The field includes elite trail athletes as well as regular runners choosing shorter distances. MIUT also carries UTMB Index status and is part of the World Trail Majors series.
