About this race
Pisão Extreme takes runners into the Serra da Arada above São Pedro do Sul, in Portugal’s Viseu District, on steep mountain trails with an average gradient of 20%. Recent listings place the main weekend in early October, and the series is in the trail running and skyrunning space, not road racing. The distances range from short mountain options around 4 km up to ultras, with regular distances listed at 15 km, 25 km, 35 km, and 65 km, plus an 85 km Infernal Edition.
The distances explain the name better than any slogan: the 15 km race climbs 1100 m, the 25 km climbs 2200 m, the 35 km climbs 3600 m, the 65 km climbs 6500 m, and the 85 km version climbs 8000 m. Courses are circular in the Serra da Arada, with starts tied to Bioparque Carvalhais in recent event information. The results boards include fast mountain runners from Portugal, Spain, and Norway, with the 65 km best times still over eight and ten hours for men and women. The organiser incorporates local folklore too, describing a mountain world of rituals, legends, wolf-killing goats, man-eating snakes, and saints carrying burning embers.
