Ultra Caminho do Peregrino

About this race
Ultra Caminho do Peregrino is a 188 km non-stop ultra from Barcelos in northern Portugal to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Runners follow the Portuguese Central Way, a pilgrimage route rather than a purpose-built race course, and they do it in semi-autonomy, so pacing, food, rest, and decision-making are part of the challenge. The event is held over a long weekend in September, with a 48-hour frame for covering the distance.
The route moves north through places tied to the Portuguese Way of Santiago, including Ponte de Lima, Valença, Redondela, Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis, and Padrón, before finishing at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. It asks for more than steady legs: runners face long hours on the move, sleep loss, noticeable climbing and descending, and weather that can change across the journey. The pilgrimage setting gives the race a different feel from a standard ultra, with the finish line landing at one of Europe’s major religious destinations rather than in a sports venue.
