About this race
Ultra Trail Marão is a mountain trail running event held in Amarante, Porto district, Portugal, in late March. The series takes runners into the Marão mountain range, offering five single-loop distances: 15 km, 25 km, 40 km, 60 km, and 120 km. The 15 km provides a mountain race without ultra distance. The 60 km route involves approximately 4,000 meters of climbing, and the 40 km route involves about 2,500 meters. Several distances contribute to the UTMB Index, relevant for runners building qualification or comparison scores.
The course selection is a primary attraction: runners can select from a 15 km trail race to a 120 km ultra, all on loop routes. The 25 km race includes around 1,000 meters of climbing, indicating that even the mid-distance option presents a challenge. Recent results for the approximately 63 km race show close to 200 finishers, with top runners from Portugal, Spain, Norway, and the Netherlands. The organizer's description, “something for everyone,” suits the format well, as the Marão weekend accommodates novice trail runners, skilled mountain specialists, and long-distance ultra runners.
