Texas Double

The Texas Double is a multi-day marathon and half marathon series held at Bachman Lake in Dallas, on park grounds near Love Field. Participants can select a half or a full marathon on each race day, with a structure designed for multiple races rather than a single event. These races are chip timed, open to all, and have no cutoff times, making them suitable for walkers, back-of-the-pack runners, and individuals accumulating races for marathon clubs. Running the Distance, LLC organizes the series, adhering to the guidelines set by the 50 State Marathon Club and Marathon Maniacs. The course consists of loops around Bachman Lake: the marathon covers 8 loops, and the half marathon uses 4 loops with a brief out-and-back section at the beginning. The terrain is predominantly fast and flat, featuring two minor inclines at the dam and near the start/finish line. The course has a history of USATF certification, though ongoing construction has impacted this; recertification is planned once the work concludes. All finishers are listed in the results and receive a medal for each race completed. An additional medal is available for completing the entire series, with one shirt provided for the series. Twenty percent of the proceeds benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the event fosters a close-knit volunteer and aid station culture that organizers refer to as a "running family."

Rock Dallas Trail Run Half Marathon, 15K & 5K

The Rock Dallas Trail Run is a trail race in Dallas, Texas, offering three distance options: a half marathon, 15K, and 5K. It is scheduled for late May, positioning it as a warm-weather Dallas running event, distinct from the city's December road marathon weekend. The available race details are limited, but the format is straightforward: participants can choose a long trail run, a middle-distance 15K, or a short 5K within the same event. This race is separate from the Dallas Marathon, the established road race that begins and ends downtown, with its full marathon course encircling White Rock Lake.

Run For The Blue Dallas

Run For The Blue Dallas is a free July run and walk based at Trinity Groves on Singleton Boulevard in Dallas. It offers 10K, 5K, and 1 Mile options, with walkers and runners both welcome. Entry includes a race bib, and runners who want chip timing can add it for a fee. The event supports fallen and injured police officers and their families, with donations going directly to the Dallas-based Blue Guardian Foundation. The routes use the Trinity Levee Trail, mostly on paved paths with some unpaved sections, and they pass views of the Dallas skyline, the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, and the Margaret McDermott Bridge. The race was founded after an ambush on Dallas police officers, and its program includes ceremonies honoring officers who were killed or injured. The Blue Guardian Foundation provides financial help to law enforcement officers nationwide after work-related illness, serious injury, loss of income, life-threatening illness, death in the family, or other catastrophic events. Volunteers help make the event work, and some volunteer slots still allow people to join the run or walk.

About cycling & running in Dallas

DFW Training Notes

Running: The 5-mile path keeps things simple. The 6-mile loop works for steady Z2, long intervals, or a clean shakeout. 214 Run Club starts 3, 5, and 8 mile runs at Katy Trail Station every Saturday at 8:30am. Ampersand Running Club meets on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Rock Dallas Trail Run Half Marathon, 15K & 5K, Hot Trot, Katy 5K, and Texas Triple anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Cyclists get mostly flat, mostly mellow cycling miles in Dallas, and the city has over 150 miles of cycling trails. The Trinity levees are the go-to for gravel riding, especially when base miles need dirt without a big production. Arlington North Ramble gives road riders a 57.1 km paved route with 429 m of gain and a max grade of 7.7%. Lone Star Cyclists, Greater Dallas Bicyclists, Matrix Cycle Club, Plano Bicycle Association, and Denton County Cycling cover group rides. DORBA and Fort Worth Mountain Biking Association keep singletrack on the menu. The Texas Time Trials is the anchor event for long-distance legs.

Season: Spring and fall are the best blocks, with March-May and September-November giving runners and cyclists the cleanest window for workouts, long rides, and race prep. Summer brings very hot and humid days, and locals get into TX summer shape by starting early, carrying bottles, and keeping plenty of work in Z2. July and August sit at the hard end of the calendar, so intervals move to cooler hours. Winter stays cool to mild most weeks, but Blue Northers can flip the plan fast. Snow shows up in about 70% of winter seasons, usually just 1-2 days per year.
