About cycling & running in San Antonio-New BraunfelsSan Antonio-New Braunfels Training Notes
Running: Locals run Brackenridge Park when they want steady miles with a river feel, and they use Government Canyon State Natural Area when trail legs need work over more than 40 miles of dirt. Friedrich Wilderness Park gives runners well-marked trails, and McAllister Park works for shorter easy days. NBTX Run Club meets every Wednesday at 7:00 PM at 343 W San Antonio St, and Pourhausnb gives the New Braunfels crew a familiar meetup. Life Time Run Club and 100 Club of San Antonio keep more runners connected. SuperHeroes Run, Run to Remember, Santa Hustle, and Watermelon Dash give the calendar its anchor race rhythm.
Cycling: Locals ride Salado Creek Greenway and The Mission Reach Trail for dependable base miles, and SATX Social Ride Club keeps the social side loose. San Antonio Wheelmen rides cover all levels, and their routes out of Bulverde, Boerne, Castroville, New Braunfels, Pickrell Park, Selma-Landa Park, and Wilderness Oaks give riders plenty of choices. The first route is 9 km with 846 m of climbing. The second route is 9 km with 1,159 m, so the climbing crowd knows where the legs start screaming.
Season: Summer owns the attitude here, because Texas heat and hills can be a kick in the ass. June brings SuperHeroes Run and the Edragon SA 5k Summer Series, and August brings Watermelon Dash and Sloth Runners Race when locals move early and keep Z2 honest. September still works for group-run rhythm, and October brings Halloween Trick or Trot Run. December changes the feel with Santa Hustle, A Merry Christmas Run, and New Year's Run, while cyclists keep checking Wheelmen terrain designations before picking intervals, gravel, or steady base miles.
